The 2017 STEAM Symposium
On March 14th, a date known by many students as Pi Day, a group of students from LaMoille High School held a conference for the schools of the Illinois Valley area. 400 students, teachers, administrators, sponsors, volunteers, and Senator Sue Rezin, in digital format, ascended to Illinois Valley Community College to share and spread Science Technology Engineering Arts Agriculture Mathematics (STEA2 M). Said Maddi Pearson, an attendee, “[This conference] showed how what we learn in school can be applied to real life. It broadens one’s horizons to the STEA2 M fields.” There were over 40 presentations with topics ranging from solar cars, robotics, 3D printing, anatomy of a piano, and many more. “I enjoyed the Anatomy of a Piano session,” said Joseph Patrick. “It was hands on, and we were able to see how the instrument works.” Schools such as DePue and Bureau Valley also presented. As a special treat, the students were provided with—of course—pies donated by Hy-Vee, Sullivan’s, Myrtle’s, and Walmart. The idea for this conference formed last year in the minds of LaMoille’s Project-Based Learning group. “We wanted to share with others the STEA2 M projects we do here, and to learn from different schools how they involve such a topic in their education,” said a group member. “[The conference] definitely gives more backing to why math and science is needed, it gives more real-life applications,” said Mrs. Flynn, a teacher who attended the seminar. The event could not be possible without the generosity of the following sponsors: Matific, Larson and Darby Architects, Carus Corporation, Lexia Learning, Monterrey Mushrooms, Koolmaster, Financial Plus, Senator Sue Rezin, Defined STEM, Perry Memorial Hospital, Staples, Fairmount Santrol, LifeTouch, and the great staff and facilities of IVCC. LaMoille Community Unit School District 303 plans to host this event on March 13, 2018 and for the years to come as long as we have generous companies that see the value in what we are doing.
